The Right Mix
Remember when we thought the future would bring flying cars and robot butlers? Well, guess what? We got something even better: AI assistants that can help run our businesses! But just like your first employee, AI needs clear instructions to be truly effective. And just like when you asked your first intern to “handle the social media,” AI requires more finesse than you might think.
As someone who’s seen entrepreneurs struggle with their first AI interactions (and made the same mistakes myself!), I’m here to help you master the art of prompting. The good news? Once you get the hang of it, AI goes from a frustrating puzzle to your most reliable team member.
Before we dive into how to prompt AI like a pro, let’s quickly discuss what not to do. We’ve all been there. You sit down, type “write me a marketing plan,” and wonder why the AI gives you a response that looks like it’s from a completely different industry, maybe even a different century!
Unlike a search engine, AI isn’t about throwing keywords into the mix and sifting through results. It’s more like having a conversation with a knowledgeable consultant….who has no context about your business.
Typing “write me something amazing” might feel empowering, but to AI, it’s like asking a barista to “just surprise me” with your morning coffee. You might end up with something wild, and not in a good way. AI thrives on clarity. Tell it your audience, tone, format, purpose, even what not to include. The more specific you are, the better the output.
“Can you write me five Instagram captions, a blog post, a strategy, a content calendar, and also summarize this YouTube video… in 30 seconds?” Sure, AI is fast, but it’s not a miracle worker without your help. Break complex tasks into smaller steps, guide the AI with feedback as you go, and you’ll actually get content you can use instead of a jumbled mess that reads like it was written on a caffeine bender.
So, let’s explore how to avoid these mistakes and prompt like a pro!
Think of your first AI interaction like introducing a new hire. You wouldn’t throw them into a project without explaining the company culture, goals, and their role, right?
Exercise: Try giving AI a specific role to play. For example: “You are a marketing consultant for a female-led startup focused on eco-friendly products.” Does the output meet your needs?
Instead of asking for a massive task in one prompt, break it down into manageable steps.
Exercise: Start by breaking down a complex task. For example: “Create a donor engagement strategy for my NGO” could be split into multiple questions, each focusing on a different step.
If there’s one thing every business owner needs to remember, it’s this: clarity trumps cleverness every time.
Exercise: Take a vague prompt like “help me improve our client intake process” and refine it to something like: “Rewrite our initial consultation questionnaire for executive coaching clients, with a focus on leadership challenges, under 10 questions.”
Instead of guessing what information AI needs, let it interview you!
This technique is especially useful when you’re dealing with complex or unclear business challenges.
When tackling complex tasks, ask AI to explain its reasoning. This ensures better results and helps you understand the thought process behind the output.
AI is quick, but it’s not perfect. One of the risks when working with AI is something called hallucination, where AI generates plausible-sounding but inaccurate information. To avoid this, always ask AI to verify its work.
By incorporating these practices into your verification process, you’ll significantly reduce the risk of AI “hallucinating” details that could mislead you or your audience.
Sometimes, showing is better than telling. If you have examples of ideal outputs, share them with AI to guide its responses.
One of the simplest and most powerful prompting techniques is to let AI take a breath.
This helps AI deliver more thoughtful and nuanced results.
Mastering AI prompting isn’t about learning complex tricks – it’s about developing clear, effective communication habits. The more you practice, the better you’ll get at directing AI to meet your needs, and the more AI will feel like a trusted partner rather than just a tool.
So don’t hold back. Start small, stay curious, and watch what’s possible when you combine your vision with the power of AI.
